July 8: Olivia's Flat
I was unable to blog while in Paris. Levi essentially went to sleep when we did, woke up when we woke up and napped while we were traveling from one place to another.
This made blogging impossible. So I'm going to try and play catch-up now with the photos and posts.
Anyway.
This was our home away from home for three weeks.
Olivia bravely surrendered her flat to a toddler who wound up breaking a bowl (thankfully that was the only thing he broke the entire stay). Having a home base while traveling made all the difference. On the days we were too tired to eat out (which meant holding wriggly, enthusiastic Levi on our lap through the whole meal--many restaurants in Paris do not offer high chairs), we cooked simple meals at home and either ate in the dining room or out on the balcony. After staying in a cramped room in Reims, we were overjoyed to return to this spacious sunny home.
There were two parks in the neighborhood where Levi went to decompress while we did laundry. He made friends with a lovely little French girl named Melissa in between washes, and that became his regular cry when we passed by the park: "Melissa!"
The metro was a few blocks away. We fell in love with the neighborhood slowly but surely after a few nightly strolls trying to put Levi to sleep.
Towards the end of our vacation, Paris was hit by a heat wave. We cooled off on the balcony where Olivia put pillows and floor mats for us to lounge on. Levi played with smooth pebbles smuggled from Nice in a bin filled with water while we researched our travel guides, plotting the next place to go see/eat/do.
One morning Douglas told me to hurry up and peek in the dining room. Levi was sitting there by himself, sipping on a cup of orange juice, looking out the window and contemplating. On the window were the words "The Happy Hours." So true.
