July 10: Be Cool, Fool

It took us a little over a week to finally say, the hell with it.
Let Levi sleep when he sleeps.  In Paris the sun did not go down until about 9:30 pm.  So it didn't get dark until maybe 10 pm.  Thus Levi slept when we slept.  I was insistent on getting him to sleep at his regular time, so the first few nights were a struggle.

It was on this very evening we eschewed Levi's regular nightly routine.  From that night on, nighttime was no longer a struggle.  It just took a mind shift.

On this evening we were weary from a long day of walking around Jardin du Luxembourg and the Latin Quarters but not ready to retire for the evening.  We thought we'd walk Levi around the neighborhood until he fell asleep then eat a late dinner.  He fell asleep.  We settled down at Le Souk and waited for our tagines to arrive.  Much to our surprise, Levi woke up--that was just a nap!

I became exasperated but Douglas, always the cool one, said that it was okay and that we should just relax and enjoy our vacation.

He also held Levi throughout the long meal.

So I let go.  Be cool, fool.

We wanted so much to see more of Paris.  Levi too, apparently, so why not let him?

And with that new mindset,  I rediscovered the pleasure of exploring at night with Levi.  This was a new adventure for all of us--Levi was enthralled by the twinkling lights of Rue de Lappe.  We strolled around all night long, taking in the cool breeze.  Levi even asked to go inside a store (a first!).

His joy was contagious and we all slept at midnight.

  2. Yup, be cool, fool! :) Costa Rica was the opposite...it got dark at 5pm. And there was NOTHING else to do so the kids watched a LOT more TV than we allowed. I mean, A LOT. I let it go by thinking it was educational for them since it was all in Spanish. ;)

    1. That was the catchphrase of a book Douglas read about being a father. We love that line! Wow--dark at 5pm? I get it--that weird mix of guilt and happiness....glad you wrote it off as educational! The trip itself is going to stay with the boys for a long, long time. I hope they turn into travelers themselves.

    1. One tip I read a while ago stuck with me re: flying with toddlers. Parents could sit separately--in a different row, far from each other so they can take turns with the toddler. This gives the other parent and the poor passengers around a break, and the toddler is overjoyed to see the other parent. Makes sense for long flights, right? I don't know why we forgot this on the way back from France to the U.S.--Levi was really good, luckily, but we really could've used the breaks!
